Round Britain Coastal Drive DVD

'Keep the Sea on the Left'

One sunny September morning, a fleet of E-type Jaguars set off from Goodwood House, West Sussex, on an epic drive around the coast of Britain. Thunderstorms in Cornwall, sunshine in Scotland and seaside towns in Yorkshire, friendly kangaroos and mysterious mice: the cars swept through it all. Philip Porter, founder of the E-type Club, led the way at the wheel of his bright red ‘Italian Job’ E-type Roadster., 848 Cry. The drive and the crews raised tens of thousands of pounds for Prostate Cancer UK and blazed the trail for many more motoring adventures to come. With spectacular filming, interviews, aerial footage and behind-the-scenes glimpses, this film tells the story of a spectacular, 4,000-mile, pioneering journey.

From the very beginning, the Jaguar E-type has been synonymous with adventure. The memorable launch of Jaguar’s new car at the Geneva Motor Show in 1961 was only possible because of two epic drives, by Bob Berry in 9600 HP and Norman Dewis in 77 RW. Both men drove through the night to get the cars on display; Berry arrived with only 20 minutes to spare. It seems appropriate, then, that the inaugural Round Britain Coastal Drive should be undertaken by a fleet of these iconic cars, led by Philip Porter in the roadster 848 CRY, once the star of 'The Italian Job'.

The RBCD is split into 18 stages, of which drivers can do one, a few or all. It covers 4,000 miles in all, from the narrow lanes of Cornwall to the sweeping valleys of Cumbria and the long, enticing roads of East Anglia. 200 E-types took part in the first event, and many participants have already vowed to complete more or even all stages on the next incarnation, tempted by spectacular Scottish scenery, convivial dinners in beautiful houses and a stop at Cromer, birthplace of E-type designer Malcolm Sayer. ‘This event was a wonderful way to see England, Wales and Scotland,’ said Porter of the 2016 drive, ‘to sample places one has heard of but never been to, and discover so many quaint villages and stylish towns. Every day had its own character and special quality. Above all, there was a wonderful camaraderie as we all had a common cause and could use the fabulous E-type Jaguars, which we are lucky enough to own, for the good of men everywhere.’

Porter founded the E-type Club in 2004 as a sister group to the International XK Club, and none other than Norman Dewis himself serves as patron. The RBCD was a natural successor to the regular tours undertaken by club members, but soon grew to become something with real purpose. Porter completed the drive shortly after recovering from prostate cancer, and the event became an excellent way to raise awareness of and funds for Prostate Cancer UK. ‘Everywhere we have gone, round the coast of Great Britain, we have been raising awareness direct with the public and through the media,’ says Porter. ‘People have been amazingly generous. And we have had a lot of fun. Everyone wins.’ Prostate cancer affects one in eight men, with someone dying every day from the disease, so it is vital that more people know of the dangers. The inaugural RBCD raised £62,000 for Prostate Cancer UK, smashing the target of £50,000, and the blue flags fluttering at the start of each stage drew plenty of attention from the public.

The next E-type RBCD will take place in 2018, after the XK Club takes a turn on the route in June 2017. Those who took part in the drive in 2016 were the first to do so, and there was the inevitable wrong turn, but by 2018 the very best routes will have been identified, ensuring it will be one to remember. With so many drivers already keen to participate and support from such notable E-type owners as Jools Holland and Ross Brawn, all the E-type Club members have to hope for is weather as good as the pioneers enjoyed. Porter only had to raise his roof for nine of the 150 hours of driving, and sunshine ensured the glorious landscapes of coastal Britain were as spectacular as anyone could wish. The RBCD looks set to become a must-do fixture in the motoring calendar.
